By dawn she knew the Accord’s oldest law: the unsanctioned bitten are owed a clean death, and Elias Gray was sent to deliver it — but broke his own law and gave her his blood instead. She refused the prognosis the way she refused a flatline — she began to chart the turning, night by night, in a city shot in cold grey with one wound of red.
